2017 Make NTU: Tapping into an Endless Well of Creativity for Young Learners
Getac Calls for Industry Experts to Challenge their Creativity and Protect the City

(February 26, 2017 Getac Technology, Taipei) The 2017 Make NTU competition kicked off on February 25 and 26. The event was collectively organized by the National Taiwan University (NTU) Electrical Engineering Student Association, and Taipei City Government Department of Information Technology, and sponsored by Getac Technology Corporation. Fifty teams of 200 undergraduates from NTU, National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech) were gathered to challenge their hardware and software integration capabilities. The theme of the competition was "A Smart City" and participating students were required to develop creative daily applications within 24 hours, from start to finish.


The Chairman of Getac James Hwang stated that, "We are so honored to be present at this competition, helping students realize their dreams. Our topic is the Protector of the Smart City, using our very own product, the Veretos Smart Mobile Monitoring System, in a practical demonstration of smart security. Students are asked to contemplate how intelligent technologies could be applied to solve urban problems and make people's lives safer. An Enterprise Award is rewarded to winning teams as a way of inspiring students to use their creative skills. Most importantly, it encourages young learners to maximize their potential and advance from being a dreamer to becoming a true maker."


Of the 31 teams competing for Getac's Enterprise Award, three teams showing exceptional performance were selected by our representing judges to receive the Best Protection Award, the Best Technology Award, and the Best Concept Award, respectively. Each winning team is entitled to a trophy and monetary award of NT$20,000.


The Best Protection Award was given to the "Smart Automobile Sensor" developed by fourth-year students, Yo-Yi Chao and his team members from NTU Department of Electrical Engineering. This sensor is capable of detecting incoming cars from behind so as to ensure that passengers can get off the car safely. The gyroscope on the sensor can automatically detect overturned cars and send out a stress signal at the first instance. It also puts approaching or passing cars on alert to effectively avert the risks of opening car doors.


The Best Technology Award was awarded to the "Smart Road Lamp Control System" developed by Ming Cheng and his team members. The underlying principle of the system is installing sensors on road surfaces so that when cars drive pass, the sensors are activated to switch on the road lamps ahead. This energy-saving design can facilitate reducing considerable public electricity expenses.


The Best Concept Award was won by Si-Ming Wang and his team from Taipei Tech for their Disaster Relief Alarm Device. In an event of a disaster, victims simply need to press the device, and the system will immediately send the GPS coordinates to emergency personnel, thus ensuring immediate rescue operation.


The 2017 Make NTU competition ended with success. Getac witnessed how students leveraged their creativity to developing smart safety applications, using their technological capacity to make a difference and create endless possibilities.
